Runway Report: A Poetic Dance of Fashion

Last Friday, I went to my first fashion show: Mari(e)-Mari(e). Mari(e)-Mari(e) is both fashion show and dance performance, held in a well-known Indonesian Restaurant in Yogyakarta: Sasanti. As a part of Printemps Francais 2009 (French spring 2009), it performs as a cultural events where Indonesian and French dancers and fashion designers work together. The cultures of both countries blend in the usage of local fabrics such as Indonesian batik, tenun, lurik, to lace and satin in this high fashion of the Spring 2009.

Fashion speaks art pleasingly in this show. Four dancers give breath and moves to the attires by Nita Azhar and Marie Labarelle. The result is almost poetic. It was not only models walking on the runway, but instead, we can see a dancer splashing waters in the pond in her attire, another beautiful dancer posing and climbing a tree, and a playful dancer running around acting like a duckling in a dress that makes her looks like a colorful swan. The blending ethnic music was played nicely by Enola & Improvasi- a house band of Sasanti.

The four dancers: Fitri Setyaningsih, Didik Nini Thowok, Marie Barbottin, and Emily White
